Unique one-off residence, Badgers View Farm, has been given planning permission and construction can now begin in the Chilterns, England.
Architects Mike Alete and Tim Hall from Lewis & Hickey were asked to design “a 4000 sq ft house with a contemporary appearance and a distinctive ‘wow’ factor both inside and out”. This splendid design not only fits the brief but has received notable acclaim from the planning office who noted the project is, “considered to incorporate a high standard of design, which will complement and respect the character and appearance of the surrounding area, with special regard to its location within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.”
The two level home with roof terrace is inspired by its physical landscape, in particular, by the Cretaceous chalk underlying the whole of the Chilterns, famously noticeable at the White Cliffs of Dover. Its cavernous white exterior reflects these surroundings ensuring it adds to, rather than takes away from the landscape. Lewis & Hickey explained that: “In many places the chalk strata are uplifted, folded and buckled and it is precisely this that motivates the design in which blocks of rock are juxtaposed and impinge one another. The house is composed of white rendered blocks which link together over a traditional ‘knapped flint wall’.”
The roof terrace and large areas of glazing ensure that the stunning scenery can be viewed from the home creating a physical connection between the building and the exterior. Construction is expected to complete next year.
